Unveiling the Mysteries:
Preliminary Findings and Next Steps

Field ResearchIn the course of my research for this project, it became evident that investigating digital embodiment as a tool for enhancing interhuman connection and communication necessitated immersive field research within virtual realms. This approach required me to gain a thorough understanding of how to navigate VR interfaces and how to effectively embody avatars myself.

As I delved into these virtual environments, I began archiving my own avatars, discovering that switching between different avatars based on the nature of the interaction added depth to my understanding. This personal experience of embodying various avatars was crucial to comprehending the diverse ways users engage and express themselves in VRChat.

Initially, my research was driven by an interest in how people debate as avatars. However, I soon realized that this focus would shift the emphasis towards modulating the environment rather than the avatars themselves. Given my primary interest in digital embodiment, I redirected my focus back to the avatars. This shift allowed for a more nuanced exploration of how avatars influence identity, interaction, and communication within virtual spaces.

This immersive approach provided invaluable insights into the complex dynamics of digital embodiment, highlighting its potential to enhance interhuman connection and communication in the virtual realm.
