Immersive Ethnographic Approach

An immersive ethnographic approach involves engaging with the virtual world and its inhabitants to understand their experiences and expressions of digital embodiment. This approach combines participant observation, in-depth interviews, and reflexive participation over a continuous period to capture the nuanced and evolving nature of virtual interactions and identities.

1. Immersive Engagement:

Continuous Presence: Spend significant time within the island world in VRChat over the span of one month to become a familiar and accepted presence.
Active Participation: Engage actively with the environment and the community, participating in events, activities, and social interactions to experience the virtual world from an insider’s perspective.

2. Ethnographic Observation:

Participant Observation: Observe how users interact with the environment and each other, taking detailed notes on behaviors, social norms, and significant events.
Reflexive Notes: Keep a reflexive journal to document your own experiences and perceptions as a researcher within the virtual world, noting how your presence may influence interactions and how your understanding evolves.
